The fishing industry is growing fast & Creative new businesses are emerging!
Growth & Entrepreneurship:
- Small local companies are becoming international but still able to know their customers by name.
- Marz Seafood grew from a small one person business above a fish factory where one woman sat by a phone and tried to sell fish. Now the business has grown to have an independent, upscale location and multiple employess working to sell fish around the globe but remaining based in Stykkisholmur. The company is all female operated and now consists of four women working locally in Iceland and two women working in Denmark. This can encourage more women to work in the fish industry and shows that they can get involved in creative and new ways. There are actually no fish in the office building and quota and boats are not involved. The company simply sells fish from mostly local resources and pride themselves on selling quality Icelandic fish. When needed they do sell fish from other countries as well. The owner spends much of her time going to conventions and marketing the business in creative ways.
